A few posts back, I wrote about my dose of writer’s block and how tough it was to get anything done. But once the mental cobwebs were cleared away, I managed to produce a piece of work of which I am quite proud. It’s a piece about Caribbean food for the BBC Food website that’s getting major play this weekend for the Notting Hill Carnival.
I focused on the diversity of Caribbean food, and I think it came out pretty well. Go on and have a read of my article about Carnival food.

You know those Sundays where you just feel to lie in your bed and do diddly squat except read the papers, look at sports on tv and eat something real easy like a salad?
I was having one of those Sundays recently, not by design but because Andrew called early o’clock to say he was feeling too bad after a hard night out to make it over for lunch. So there I was leisurely trundling around the house in semi-nightware when my good pal EJ buzzed the doorbell and I thought, “Oh shit, I forgot to tell EJ that lunch was off!”

The state of the Caribbean sugar industry was the focus of an article in the most recent edition of the Observer Food Monthly. The once powerful sugar industry is going through a crisis and what was a way of life for several generations of Caribbean people is now on the brink of collapse.
For years, European nations gave its former colonies in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific preferential access to its markets and paid higher than world market prices to encourage development. But several years ago, the World Trade Organisation said the regime was unfair and ordered the European Union to reduce quotas and prices for sugar.

My last post was on July 15th, that’s almost a month ago. Not updating your site for a month is a step towards virtual suicide, at least that’s what the experts say. But in recent weeks, I have not been able to write a word - nothing, zero, zilch.
It was the first time in my life that I’ve ever suffered from writer’s block. The ideas were all there but nothing came out. I thought if I cooked and cooked, I’d find my muse but it didn’t work. In the end, only the threat of missed deadlines forced me to write.
