Who can’t peel an orange?
June 5th, 2008 by TrinifoodI wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cuss when I read this in the Times today: Sales of oranges are declining because people can’t peel them.
It sounds totally ridiculous! How could people in 21st century Britain not know how to peel a damn orange?
The article says; “Several reports this week have alerted us to that fact that sales of oranges have plummeted for the third year running because peeling an orange is now considered too time-consuming. And because they drip all over your keyboard, and make your hands sticky, and give off such a powerful scent that someone asks “Who’s been eating an orange?” and you end up justifying to a colleague, neighbour or spouse an act that should in ideal circumstances be private.”
What’s the world coming to? Anyway, if you think you need a refersher in peeling oranges, get your sharp knife, a tablespoon and check out the article.

i read this from the guardian food blog…no matter thr trouble, even if i squirt it in my eye, oranges are worth the trouble. And are these people who usually deal with the thin skinned easy to peel varieties anyway?

Lol! That’s what happens when half the population are graduates. They can calculate the volume but can’t remove the peel to get inside.

This is crazy. I love oranges. I grew up eating my mom’s homemade ambrosia at Christmas which combines my favorite flavors…orange and coconut. I love the smell of a freshly peeled orange and big slice of fresh orange in a big glass of sweet ice tea!

I have two comments to make about “Peeling an Orange”.
What in the hell is the world coming to.. Have our jenes mutated to the point that we have become incapable of doing simple things..
I did say I wanted to make another comment.. As a Restaurant owner I see some opportunities in the above information.. I envisage more people going out to eat or have their meals prepared and delivered to them… and that is good.. for the business.

The trouble with these people is that they got instructions to peg an orange; they still have to get the instructions to peel an orange….beginning at the top of the orange make a small incision and keep the blade of the knife beneath the skin and continue in a spiral motion ….. you get the idea ha ha :^)

This is something that should be on the cover of the Onion. Sad really, the lonely orange. I guess eventually they will all be shelved with other annoyances like shoelaces and toilet paper.

It’s all very silly.
Are they saying that today’s parents can’t be bothered to teach their children how to peel an orange?
Has the fruit bowl in our homes disappeared?

Totally agreed Margaret. I don’t know what’s going on. Everything is so ‘convenient’ that people are losing basic skills, like peeling oranges!
